Sri Lanka

Culture

Sri Lanka boasts a rich and diverse cultural heritage, influenced by centuries of Buddhism, Hinduism, colonial rule, and local traditions. The country is famous for its ancient temples, vibrant festivals like Vesak and Kandy Esala Perahera, traditional dance forms, and flavorful cuisine loaded with spices and coconut. Tea culture is deeply rooted here, thanks to the colonial British legacy.

Currency

The official currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas and tourist spots, but cash is recommended for small towns and local markets.

Weather

Sri Lanka enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures hovering between 26°C to 32°C. The island experiences two monsoon seasons – the Southwest Monsoon (May to September) and the Northeast Monsoon (October to January). The southern and western coasts are best visited from December to March, while the eastern coast shines from May to September.

Sri Lankans are known for their warmth and hospitality. The majority ethnic groups are the Sinhalese and Tamils, along with Muslim and Burgher communities. Despite past conflicts, modern-day Sri Lanka is a mosaic of ethnic harmony, where visitors are often greeted with genuine smiles and a welcoming spirit.
